Want to get away from the crowds and see a different slice of Africa? Come North with us to Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs Reserves. Along the way, we’ll pass the country’s tallest peak, snow-capped Mt. Kenya. In Samburu, you’ll find abundant wildlife as the reserve features plenty of the big cats and over 900 elephants. Neighboring Shaba and Buffalo Springs offer a dramatic choice of scenic terrain – from riverine forests to old lava flows to marshes and springs. There’s so much variety of wildlife and landscape awaiting you on this short 3-day adventure, so give yourself a treat. Contact us and we’ll book your own private tour right on the spot.

There’s something about Samburu National Reserve that our guests find calming, even in the midst of all the wildlife. Perhaps it’s the fact that Samburu is somewhat off the beaten path, so you’ll enjoy a wild game park with fewer tourists. And you’ll be treated to the sight of such unique creatures as Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk and the Somali Ostrich.

Your safari also includes visits to neighboring reserves – Buffalo Springs features a volcanic landscape broken up by forest and marsh. At Shaba National Reserve you’ll find a greener landscape than Samburu with forests, woodlands and even the iconic Shaba Hill Volcano. Combined, these three parks are a visual feast of scenic terrain and wildlife. And should you have any favorites, let us know so we can help personalize your African Safari.

Places You’ll See :

Kenya is a country in East Africa with coastline on the Indian Ocean. It encompasses savannah, lakelands, the dramatic Great Rift Valley and mountain highlands. It's also home to wildlife like lions, elephants and rhinos. From Nairobi, the capital, safaris visit the Maasai Mara Reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migrations, and Amboseli National Park, offering views of Tanzania's 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Schedule Details

Day 1

NAIROBI – SAMBURU: 320Km: Appr. 5 hrs

Meal plan: Lunch, Dinner

07:30 hrs. – Your driver/guide will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel, residence or Nairobi airport. Then we’ll head out in our 4 x 4 Jeep over Kenya’s central highlands enjoying views of small, local coffee, tea, sisal and pineapple farms.

We’ll also pass the imposing form of Mt. Kenya, the pride of our country and its tallest peak.

Day 2

SAMBURU

Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

We’ll meet the new day with a game drive to look for lion, leopard, cheetah and whoever else might show up in the dawning light.

Following the path of the Ewaso Ngiro River, we’ll be on the lookout for elephant, buffalo, and some of the more entertaining wildlife like dik-dik, warthog and the olive baboon.

Samburu is also known as one of the two regions where conservationist Joy Adams raised Elsa the Lioness, later made famous in the book and movie, Born Free.

Here too, are the Samburu people, closely related to the Maasai, an indigenous, pastoral group, who have inhabited this region for eons.

As always on our safaris, be as active as you wish or relax at your safari accommodation.

Day 3

SAMBURU – NAIROBI

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch.

Our final morning in the park will give us opportunities to add more wildlife sightings to our checklist. But not all the park’s animal activity is limited to mammals. Samburu hosts over 350 species of birdlife including kingfisher, vulture, guinea fowl, egret, falcon and eagle. You’ll have plenty to keep watching for on the land, in the springs and overhead.

We’ll enjoy another game drive as we exit the park on our journey back to Nairobi.

Heading back to the city, we’ll break up the drive with a stop for lunch.

Suggestions on things to bring

GENERAL SAFARI PACKING

  • Bright summer clothes for safari tour (Strong colours can attract unwanted attention from flies found in certain areas of the parks). Laundry is cheap and available, so do not pack much in terms of clothes
  • Fuller clothes for evenings at the hotel and lodge, such as long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect you against mosquitoes after sunset and, if necessary, against the sun
  • A jacket/sweater, as it can be cool in the early morning and evening
  • Summer Footwear (e.g. sports shoes and cotton socks). Avoid walking on bare feet and or leaving your legs naked at night due to mosquitoes
  • Power adapter with 3-4 sockets – this enables a shaver, trimmer, electric toothbrush and any batteries to be charged via a single adapter
  • Small flashlight and extra batteries
  • Hat that shields against the sun
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm
